Course Description: Review of first law. Second law and thermodynamic analysis of process. Power and refrigeration cycles. Thermodynamic properties of pure substances and homogeneous mixtures. Phase behavior of ideal solutions.
 
 
BEN 301 – Biological Principles for Engineers
 
 
Course Description: Introduction to cell types and structure, nucleic acids, proteins and enzyme kinetics. Gene expression including transcription, translation and post-translational modification. Introduction to genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. Genetic engineering and tissue engineering. Applications to biotechnology.
 
 
CEN 551 – Biochemical Engineering
 
 
Course Description: Introduction to microbiology, genetic engineering, and enzyme kinetics. Engineering principles for bioprocesses, including oxygen and heat transfer, bioreactor design, and separation processes. Introduction to novel systems and technologies in biochemical engineering.
 
The course is open to graduate and upper class engineering and science students.
 
Prerequisites: CHE 275, 346; CEN 333 or equivalent.
